Fans of Riverdale’s lead characters may believe the actors have their choice of future roles. Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica, says that’s not the case.

“Nothing is guaranteed,” she told Teen Vogue. “A lot of people think that once you’ve reached this point you can book whatever you want, but it’s not like that at all.”

But that doesn’t align with where the 26-year-old’s career is heading — or where it has been.

Like most female actresses, Mendes has acted in popular romantic comedies. She was either the love interest or the popular girl protagonist. Her first film was 2018s The New Romantic, but not as the lead. Then she was in the Noah Centineo-led The Perfect Date

This year, though, she became the star of the Netflix thriller Dangerous Lies. But they already know her well from Riverdale.  It has quite the viewership on the streaming platform. In Dangerous Lies, she plays a caretaker who inherits a large sum of money and shares it with her husband. With that comes secrets they regretfully uncover.

That wasn’t even Mendes’ biggest hit of the summer. She played a minor but prominent role in the Andy Samberg hit Palm Springs. She stars as the bride of the wedding the leads keep reliving. She serves as a good “Hey. It’s that person” in a bonafide summer flick worth rewatching.

Right now, Riverdale is preparing for season five. With the COVID-19 pandemic halting its production a few times, it’s unclear when the teen drama will be back. Mendes’ momentum continues, though. She will appear in the upcoming film Strangers, which pairs her with another up-and-comer, Maya Hawke. The film is from Someone Great director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. With Riverdale five seasons in and with no signs of stopping, we can’t wait to see where Camila Mendes ends up.
