THE INSATIABLE CATHERINE
Helen Mirren Reigns As Catherine The Great

Catherine the Great takes as many men as she wants, and as the rumour goes horses too, but she never lets them get close enough to take her throne. She lets them quench her thirst — or at least makes them feel like they have. Catherine the Great is a badass boss who knows how to work the system, at least according to the new HBO show of the same name.
Helen Mirren stars as the woman whose number was likely higher the the years she reigned over Russia. (That was 34 years, by the way.) Every man wanted to fuck her, but no man wanted to get close enough to take away her power. They would have been dead before they got too far.
The four episode limited series documents Catherine’s relationship with Grigory Potemkin (Jason Clarke), who quickly becomes her favorite lover. But that does not mean she goes soft. Oh no. She keeps him in his place — beneath her in political, social and private settings.
The show is yet another example of the ever-changing landscape of period dramas. In the last couple years, we’ve seen real-life stories of women turning the tables on their male counterparts to royally screw them over. Just look at The Favourite. The threesome fantasy took Queen Anne’s story and showed how one of her favorites rose to power by completely skirting the system. It’s a refreshing tale, and we can’t wait to see Helen Mirren take on that role in Catherine the Great.
