STEAMY STREAMING: COMING OUT
Booksmart, Beginners, The Danish Girl + more!

Cue Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out” because it’s that time of year again — National Coming Out Day! It takes place every Oct. 11 when we celebrate the out and proud LGBTQ+ members in our lives and allow people the space to be who they are. This week on PROVOKR, we’re giving you the best coming out stories you can find in cinema:
CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
To kick things off, we have one of our favorite movies, Call Me By Your Name. Timothee Chalamet comes out in this film and takes up a relationship with an older man, Armie Hammer. It’s a sexy summer Italian love story where a peach plays a more important than most of the characters.
Call Me By Your Name is available to stream on Starz.
BOOKSMART
Kaitlyn Dever’s character Amy doesn’t technically come out in Booksmart, but that makes it more impactful. She’s gay, and her character doesn’t have to come out on screen. It’s pretty monumental. But the past part is her awkward sex scene in the bathroom of a friend’s party. That will go down in history as one of the best scenes in cinema.
Booksmart is available to rent on Amazon.
BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR
Coming out stories on screen are often paired with coming-of-age narratives. That’s definitely the case with the French film Blue Is The Warmest Color. Emma finds herself falling for a woman with blue hair, Adele. Emma is mocked and mistreated at school when people find out she’s into women. It leads Emma on a journey of self discovery that so many people can relate to.
Blue Is The Warmest Color is available on Netflix.
THE DANISH GIRL
Eddie Redmayne stars as Lili Elbe, the one of the first people to receive gender-reaffirming surgery. The film follows the relationship of Lili and her wife, played by Alicia Vikander. Though Redmayne was billed as the lead actor in the film, Alicia Vikander stole the show. That’s probably why she won an Oscar for it.
The Danish Girl is available on HBO.
BEGINNERS
Christopher Plummer plays an old man who comes out to his son, played by Ewan McGregor, late in his life. The movie follows the father-son duo as they navigate their lives. For Oliver (McGregor) that means falling in love with a beautiful woman. For Hal (Plummer), it means living as much life as he can even though he has cancer. It’s an emotional story with a tinge of comedy.
Beginners is available to rent on YouTube.
BELOW HER MOUTH
If you’re looking for something extra steaming to heat up your movie-watching plans, look no further than Below Her Mouth. Two women fall into a passionate affair full of climaxes. Sure, having sex on wooden stairs doesn’t sound comfortable, but you wouldn’t even notice with the endorphins.
Below Her Mouth is available on Netflix.
