DAS BOOT REIMAGINED

The World War II Drama On Hulu

In 1981, a film called Das Boot was released, and now Hulu has reimagined it for subscribers’ viewing pleasure.

The setting is the same: a claustrophobic u-boat (or a submarine) during World War II. It doesn’t follow exactly the same path as its film counterpart, but it’s loosely the same plot. A young crew on the submarine battle extremely dangerous water warfare while carrying out a surveillance mission. The tight quarters create tension in multiple ways, and the stunning cinematography puts you in the boat with the cast.

But you’re not going to feel confined throughout the whole viewing experience. Meanwhile, Simone Strasser (Vicky Krieps) remains on land. Her loyalties for her home country of Germany are tested when she feels passion for the resistance. The complexities of living in that era as a German-born are there.

The series comes about a month after Hulu’s release of Catch-22, another WWII adaptation. Platforms have taken a liking to the historical, European television. HBO did back Chernobyl this year. So this 8-part series is on the trend, and you’re not going to want to miss it.

Das Boot also stars Rick Okon, Lizzy Chaplan, Rainer Bock, Tom Wlaschiha, Vincent Kartheiser, August Wittgenstein, Leonard Schleicher and Clara Ponsot.
