DEWANDA WISE HAS IT
Spike Lee’s ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ Returns

Get to know the face of DeWanda Wise because she is about to be one of the most famous women in TV and film. The actress recently picked up credits in Netflix’s hit Gina Rodriguez film Someone Great as the fun-loving bestie that would get down to Lizzo any day. Then she starred in the dramatic “Six Degrees of Freedom” episode of The Twilight Zone. But before all that, she was given the lead in Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It, a show on Netflix.
She’s Gotta Have It is a television remake of Lee’s first film of the same name that came out in 1986. The premise of season one is pretty much unchanged from the movie: Nola (Wise) navigates her sexuality, work life and social life. She dates not one, not two, but three men. One is a married businessman; another is a vain photographer/model; and the third is a Puerto Rican (a difference from the original) basketball enthusiast.
The show takes a more pointed, updated look at sexism and sexuality in the 21st century. And in season two, it looks like Nola is taking time to figure out who she is as an artist and how to implement her personal life into her creations. With Lee behind the camera for all of the second season, which premieres May 24, you’re going to want to catch up and see the beauty that is Wise on your screen.
