Fall TV Preview
A guide to the most provocative shows

Fleabag
Imported from the UK, this dramedy—which may be the most provocative series of the new season—is based on a monologue written by the show’s star Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The main character has been described as a “dry-witted, angry, cash-strapped, grief-riddled, porn-watching young woman trying to come to terms with a recent tragedy… sleeping with anyone who dares to stand too close, squeezing money from wherever she can, rejecting anyone who tries to help her, and keeping up her bravado throughout.”
Fleabag premieres Friday, September 16 on Amazon Video
Divorce
Sarah Jessica Parker returns to HBO in this comedy about a woman who finds herself in a failing marriage and is eager for change. Yes, it’s a comedy and yes it’s on HBO but that’s where the comparison ends between Parker’s Divorce character, Frances, and her Sex and the City alter ego Carrie Bradshaw. “Frances is so much her own person,” Parker has said. “She’s so distinct from, not only Carrie, but any other character I had ever played.”
Divorce premieres Sunday, October 9 at 10 PM on HBO
This is Us
One of the most buzzed about shows of the fall, this ensemble drama about a group of people whose paths cross in unexpected ways stars singer/actress Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia (Gilmore Girls, Heroes) and Sterling K. Brown (the actor who played Christopher Darden in the FX saga The People v. O.J. Simpson).
This is Us premieres Tuesday, September 20 at 10pm on NBC
The Crown
A ten-part Netflix series about the reign of the current queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II. The Crown’s show runner Peter Morgan—who wrote the 2006 film The Queen starring Helen Mirren—said the series would explore “the terrible impact becoming queen had on her and all her relationships.”
The Crown premieres Friday, November 4 on Netflix
Westworld
Based on the 1973 film of the same name, Westworld—which stars Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Harris, and Thandie Newton—is a sci-fi thriller set in a futuristic Wild West theme park populated by artificial beings.
Westworld premieres Sunday, October 2 at 9pm on HBO
Chance
A psychological thriller starring House’s Hugh Laurie as a neuropsychiatrist who has his life turned upside down after having an affair with one of his patients—a married woman who appears to be struggling with multiple personality disorder.
Chance premieres Wednesday October 19 on Hulu
Atlanta
Community star Donald Glover is creator, co-writer and executive producer of this dark comedy about two cousins who are trying to make a name for themselves within Atlanta’s hip hop community. Glover has described the show as “Twin Peaks with rappers.”
Atlanta premieres Tuesday, September 6 at 10pm on FX
American Horror Story: Season 6
Ryan Murphy and company have kept the theme of the sixth season of the horror anthology—which has focused on haunted houses, freak shows, witches covens etc—a mystery. But given the creepiness of this teaser trailer, the show’s aims-to-shock formula seems to be intact.
American Horror Story: Season 6 premiers Wednesday, September 14 at 10pm on FX
Black Mirror: Season 3
There’s only an atmospheric trailer available, but the long-awaited third season of cult-favorite anthology series that envisions the most chilling ways that technology can impact modern life returns this fall with an all-star roster including Bryce Dallas Howard, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights) and Rashida Jones (as a co-writer of one of the episodes.).
Black Mirror: Season 3 premieres Friday, October 21 on Netflix
Good Girls Revolt
Think of it as the Mad Men of the publishing world, but with a stronger feminist twist. This 1969 newsroom-set drama is partially based on the sexual discrimination cases chronicled in Lynn Povich’s book The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women Of Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace.
Good Girls Revolt premieres Friday, October 28 on Amazon Video.
Quarry
A dark tale about a Vietnam vet Mac Conway who returns home to Memphis and finds himself ostracized by his friends, family and the public. His isolation lures Conway into a deadly life of crime.
Quarry premieres Friday, September 9 at 9pm on Cinemax
Marvel’s Luke Cage
After appearing in Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) gets his own superhero series showcasing the crimefighting perks of having unbreakable skin and superhuman strength.
