Five Emmy-Nominated Shows You Must Watch

The Emmys have been announced, and, as always, there were some upsetting snubs (where’s the Twin Peaks love?!). Surprisingly, though, there were a bunch of unexpected nominations for some of our favorite shows. Here are five female-centric programs you might not be watching yet.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
The early favorite to win a bunch of awards is Amazon‘s breakthrough series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It’s been nominated for 14 awards, including big ones in writing, directing, and – of course – lead female actor, Rachel Brosnahan. Best known for her roles in House of Cards, as the doomed prostitute Rachel Posner, and the ill-advised Woody Allen TV project, Crisis in Six Scenes, Brosnahan has finally secured her place on the A-list. She deserves it!
GLOW
Based on the real-life stories of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, GLOW was nominated for an amazing ten Emmy awards, including Best Comedy Series, as well as nods for directing and casting. Naturally, giving the 1980s setting and action-packed premise, the show also scored nominations for hairstyling and stunt coordination. Surprisingly, fan favorites Alison Brie (The Disaster Artist) and Marc Maron (check out his podcast, WTF) failed to earn their just acclaim, but we’ll just have to wait and see if Betty Gilpin (Nurse Jackie) can bring one home for the team, as they say.
Godless
Out of nowhere, Godless came and rocked our worlds. A hard-edged Western drama from creator Scott Frank and producer Steven Soderbergh, Godless focuses on a renegade gang member who rebels against his former friends and finds refuge in a town inhabited solely by women. Action, drama, and a clever commentary on gender politics ensues. The show is nominated for twelve Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series, writing and directing for Scott Frank, and acting nods for Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery, Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie), and the always great, Jeff Daniels (Newsroom).
Insecure
It seems corny and non-descriptive to say this, but it’s true: Issa Rae is nothing less than a revelation, and her Emmy nomination is well-deserved. Her HBO series, Insecure, is one of the most compelling dramatic comedies running today, and has earned universal praise for its frank, but funny, portrayal of Americana in the black community. The series is hoping to capitalize on its Emmy success; the third season is due to debut on August 12.
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
If you’ve been longing for new episodes of 30 Rock, look no further than The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Creator Tina Fey and her team initially created the series for NBC, but after the network unexpectedly dropped the show, Netflix swooped in and picked it up. The show has been an Emmy darling for years, and it’s hoping to bring home the bacon in time for its final batch of episodes… Yes, it’s true; Kimmy Schmidt’s final adventures will debut on Netflix in January 2019.
