The Rain, a new thriller

A Danish Survivalist Series

Humanity is so scared of the apocalypse. Nobody knows what form it will take, be it nuclear war, a viral outbreak, or a demonic invasion. However, if post-apocalyptic fiction has taught us anything, it’s that the end of the world is just the beginning of the next chapter for humankind.

The Rain is a Danish television series about the survivors of the end of the world, struggling to survive the new status quo. Six years after a man-made virus got out of hand and killed everybody, two siblings emerge from the safety of their bunker and try to carve out an existence for themselves while avoiding the toxic rain which still carries the virus. Along the way, they have to deal with a group of child survivors, adding a Lord of the Flies dynamic to the traditional post-apocalyptic genre trappings.

Even with all the violence and fear related to their new circumstances, The Rain is also a coming-of-age story about two young people who feel like outcasts in a mysterious world full of wonder and danger, so we can probably expect some old-fashioned YA-style drama to go along with the grim terror of the world’s end.

The Rain debuts May 4 on Netflix.
