HILARY SWANK IN AWAY
A Dangerous Mission in Space on Netflix

Since starring as Gail Getty in FX’s Trust, two-time Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank is returning to live-action TV. This time, though, her story takes her out of Earth’s atmosphere and into space in Netflix’s upcoming series Away.
Away follows NASA’s first mission to Mars and Swank’s character, Emma Green, serves as commander. She leads a team of astronauts coping with the reality of prolonged space travel. How long, you ask? Well, it’s 30 years. The crew has to reconcile with not seeing their loved ones as they deal with their struggles. And, being in a confined location with six people is bound to cause issues.
“I love that this commander of the mission to Mars is a woman, and that’s not the drama of the story. That shows how far we’ve come towards equality. The drama was these richly, racial backgrounds, these people who are on this journey, working towards a goal together, while having this gravitational pull to Earth, these families that made it a love story,” Swank told Deadline. “My character was dealing with this dream come true of this mission to Mars, dream come true of being a mother, which was unexpected and growing these deep relationships with these other human beings she was on this mission with and breaking through these stereotypes.”
Emma watches her daughter — played by up-and-comer Talitha Eliana Bateman — grow up from millions of miles away. At the same time, her husband (The Good Wife’s Josh Charles) copes with medical issues.
Away hails from creators Jessica Goldberg and Andrew Hinderaker, but it’s the buying power of executive producer Jason Katims that carries the weight. Katims is best known for producing the emotional hits Parenthood and Friday Night Lights, so prepare for the waterworks, PROVOKRs. And don’t forget to watch the trailer above.
