HIS DARK MATERIALS IS HERE
From Book To Film To TV

The His Dark Materials series is getting a well-deserved facelift — and it includes Lin-Manuel Miranda. The acclaimed book series that was adapted for the 2007 film The Golden Compass is being adapted yet again at HBO.
This might come as a surprise, but the trilogy of books written by Philip Pullman came out in the ’90s, so the source material is older than the series’ lead actress, Dafne Keen, 14. She plays the heroine Lyra Belacqua, who is deemed somewhat of the Chosen One to venture and lead life through its parallel universes. It starts with her looking for her kidnapped friend, but she of course uncovers a sinister plot along the way. It’s a sci-fi thriller oozing with fantasy elements.
Because it’s a series and not a movie, Philip Pullman’s full story will get a chance to shine. The 2007 movie, The Golden Compass, only followed the first novel, and there is only so much you can put in a movie. HBO is also a great place to distribute this dark, gritty narrative. But don’t worry: The ruthless polar bear is still in this adaptation, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is its wrangler. The first season consists of eight episodes, and it appears there are eight more slated for season two. Each episode will end where you don’t expect it and leave you wanting more, just like the trailer. (Watch it above.)
Speaking of wanting more, all of your favorite actors and actresses will make an appearance. Remember Hot Priest Andrew Scott from Fleabag? He’ll be in it. James McAvoy will portray Lord Arsiel and Ruth Wilson will assume the role of Marisa Coutler. There are so many more, we can’t even begin to name them all. Needless to say, His Dark Materials will take us on a wild ride, and we are buckled in and ready.
His Dark Materials premieres Nov. 4 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
