The Euphoria withdrawals ended when we saw Zendaya’s character, Rue, in a special episode in December. Now, it’s Hunter Schafer’s turn in the spotlight as Jules, the happy-go-lucky girl with intense secrets. Not only does Schafer star, but she also helped write the script.

“The writing process took months,” she told The New York Times. “There was a week where we spent hours on the phone every day to get the episode fleshed out.”

Schafer co-wrote the episode with creator Sam Levinson, who has truly mastered the COVID-19 production experience. The director brought together Zendaya and John David Washington for the drama-filled romance that will hit Netflix on February 5. Malcolm and Marie was filmed in one location and Netflix bought the hot commodity for $30 million.

The production prepared him for two particular episodes that bridge seasons one and two of Euphoria. The first was an intimate conversation between Rue and her AA sponsor and some of the best TV dialogue in a long time. Jules’ episode seems self-exploratory in a different way. She’s out experiencing things and realizing that Rue accepted her for who she is. At least that’s the sense we get from the trailer — watch it by clicking the top image.

Filming of Euphoria season two was on hold due to the pandemic, but it couldn’t stop HBO’s breakout hit. After winning several Emmys, including Zendaya for Best Actress in Lead Role, Drama, Levinson had to capitalize on this momentum. Not to mention he would have a lot of disappointed fans if we went all of 2020 and most of 2021 without an episode.

To say we’re excited for Schafer is an understatement. It is a massive leap for her career, and we hope this leads to her penning more episodes in the future.
