Lady Dynamite Blows Up
The Netflix Comedy is on the Bi-polar Express

On Netflix, there’s something for everybody. The streaming service has a wide variety of shows, from the horror/adventure of Stranger Things to the political intrigue of House of Cards (which just got a whole lot more intriguing), to the psychological torment of Mindhunter. For those who prefer something a bit more…let’s say, “uninhibited,” then Lady Dynamite is the show you’ve been looking for.
Loosely based on the exploits of its creator/star, Maria Bamford (playing herself), Lady Dynamite follows the misadventures of its protagonist as she navigates romance, relationships, work, and the unpredictability of life itself. At the start of the first season, Maria had just emerged from treatment for her bipolar disorder, and was working to rebuild her life and career. Season two sees her in a better place, and – in a meta twist – she’s working on a new television project which could bode well for her future. The project’s name, naturally, is Maria Bamford is Nuts. The disparate pieces of her scattered existence are precariously balanced, but at least they’re still standing. Of course, it would only take a light breeze for everything to tumble into a mess once again, but that’s just the way life is!
Lady Dynamite has been described as an R-rated version of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, in that they both utilize unfiltered comedy to deal with real psychological issues in an exaggerated version of the real world. Of course, Lady Dynamite has a lot more sex and F-bombs, and when it chooses to get dark and heavy, it dives in headfirst, with its non-linear timelines allowing for an insightful look at mental illness in addition to its rapid-fire jokes. LD deftly navigates the high-wire act of depressing drama and outrageous comedy with a nigh-unbelievable grace. The series is already a cult favorite, and anticipation for the new season is high among its dedicated fanbase. Also, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that Maria Bamford is as cute as a button!
Lady Dynamite: Season 2 debuts November 10 on Netflix.
