Liar, he said/she said

There are Two Sides To Every Bad Date Story

Sundance TV‘s latest series is a British import tackling risky subject matter and intimate drama. Liar aims to be the ultimate “He Said/She Said,” with a plot revolving around a first date which quickly goes from sweet to sour.

Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abby) and Ioan Gruffudd (Horatio Hornblower) play Laura and Andrew, who each have decidedly different recollections of the events of that night. To convey the tried-and-true “Roshomon” storytelling, Sundance has released two trailers; “Laura Remembers” and “Andrew Remembers.” The show will dissect its life-changing conflict from the perspectives of both characters while slowly working its way towards the truth over the course of its six-episode duration.

Who is telling the truth? Who is lying? What secrets are both characters hiding, from their friends, from their family, from each other, and from themselves? Liar is preparing to approach its interpersonal drama with the speed and ferocity of the tightest thrillers, and we can’t wait to see how it all shakes out, as they say. The team of Harry and Jack Williams (The Missing) are no stranger to dealing in unique storytelling devices for the sake of complex and difficult drama; they currently have another series, Rellik (the reverse of Killer), which is told in reverse chronological order, like Christopher Nolan’s Memento. That show will make its American debut on Cinemax sometime in the near future.

Liar premieres September 27 on Sundance TV.
