Lord of the Rings fans, rise up! As we speak, a new Amazon series is in production and will premiere exclusively on Prime Video on September 2, 2022. Amazon Studios and Tolkien Estate produce the show, Tolkien Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema are the producers.

According to Wikipedia, Amazon bought the television rights for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings in November 2017 for a whopping $250 million. The planned-out five-season series is estimated to be worth at least $1 billion, making it the most expensive television series ever produced. In addition, the show was shot in New Zealand, which means it’s bound to be stunning scenery.

We know very little about the series itself. The entire cast has been announced–and it’s a lot of people. The cast includes Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Simon Merrells, Daniel Weyman, Ian Blackburn, and many more.

There is no trailer yet, but we know that it takes place during the Second Age of Middle-earth’s history, thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit take place. Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, said about the series: “I can’t express enough just how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-earth. Our talented producers, cast, creative and production teams have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this untold and awe-inspiring vision to life.”

Though we still have a lot of time left until the show is released, it’s safe to say that it will be worth the wait.
