In the upcoming action thriller Kate, Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as the titular assassin who learns after being poisoned that she only has 24 hours left to live. Faced with her impending death, and armed with the skills to murder anyone who crosses her, she embarks on a bloody journey through Tokyo to kill anybody who played a part in her own impending murder. Along the way, she befriends the daughter of a former target.

The trailer opens on Kate, she’s bloodied up and not in a good place. We learn that she was in the middle of a job when she was struck with something causing her to miss her target. That something she was struck with, turns out to be a poison for which there is no antidote. She is most definitely going to die. The preview promises us a frenetic, action-packed adventure with a hard-to-decipher assassin babe as the lead.

Winstead has been making a name for herself in the action world, with roles in Birds of Prey, Gemini Man, and now Kate. Maybe one day we’ll get to see her team up with fellow action-star Charlize Theron (Kelly McCormick who produced the Theron action vehicle Atomic Blonde also served as a producer on Kate.)

According to an interview Winstead gave with Rolling Stone, her training for her role in Birds of Prey helped her immensely with the action sequences for this film. She is quoted as saying, ”I worked with [John Eusebio] … and some of the same stunt time as Kate for Birds of Prey for many months. So by the time Kate came around, it was sort of like, ‘You kind of got the basics; we don’t have to train you the same way we had to train you for Birds of Prey. We can just jump straight into the choreography.”

Cedric Nicolas-Troyan directed the movie from a script written by Umair Aleem. In addition to Winstead, the movie stars Miku Martineau, Woody Harrelson, Michiel Huisman, and Tadanobu Asano.

Kate is scheduled to be released on Netflix on September 10, 2021.
