GET A QUICK BITE
Liam Hemsworth, Sophie Turner Are QUIBI Stars
Spring is a busy time for streaming platforms this year. HBO Max and Peacock are set to launch then, but an even bigger site is looking to disrupt the already flooded subscription-based services. Quibi will launch in April with $4.99 and $7.99 plans (depending if you can survive ads). But what makes this one stand out? Every show will be 10 minutes or less.
The short-short format might be due to shrinking attention spans or the need to binge a whole series in one day while maintaining a busy schedule. Nevertheless, Quibi will rival Netflix, forcing companies that have been at the forefront of streaming to reevaluate their business model. Or maybe not. It’s very likely Netflix won’t have to change at all and the two can co-exist, providing different markets and shows.
Speaking of shows, Quibi unleashed a stellar lineup full of reality TV, dramas, comedies and so much more. Some of Hollywood’s most famous people will have their own shows, which means we’ll get to see a whole lot more of them. Here’s a breakdown of all that Quibi has to offer:
DRAMA
It’s difficult to imagine a world in which a drama comes in 10-minute installments, but we’re intrigued nonetheless. Directors Guillermo del Toro, Steven Soderbergh and Ridley Scott are bringing their signature talents to Quibi. Sophie Turner is following up Game Of Thrones with Survive, a story which finds her and another person surviving the elements after their plane crashes. Liam Hemsworth and Christoph Waltz will star alongside each other in Most Dangerous Game, a cat-and-mouse thriller. Laura Dern will serve as the protagonist in Just One Drink, which is a series of one-act vignettes told in a bar. There is definitely a lot going on here.
HORROR
Steven Spielberg crafted a super spooky story that will only be available after the sun goes down each night. Quibi built a clock into its app, allowing viewers a limited period of time each day to watch the show. That’s not the only scary series, though. Anna Sophia Robb will act in Emma, a series from American Psycho director Mary Harron.
COMEDY
If you name a comedy actor, chances are they are going to star in a show on Quibi. Here’s a list of stars you can expect to see, and we’ll just leave it at that: Fred Armisen, Tina Fey, Wanda Sykes, Maya Rudolph, Patton Oswalt, Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, Daryl Hannah, Bill Murray, Alyssa Milano, Will Arnett, Anna Kendrick and Darren Criss.
NEWS
Quibi does not only want to entertain, it wants to inform, as well. In a series of shows from NBC, BBC, TMZ and any other three-letter acronym news sites, viewers will get a brief rundown of what’s happening in the news. 60 Minutes is even on board to do its show in a quick 6 minutes.
REALITY
Reality TV isn’t for everyone, but Quibi is bringing out some likeable figures to reel you in. Chrissy Teigen will take on a Judge Judy-like role on Chrissy’s Court and Zac Efron goes off the grid in the ominously titled Killing Zac Efron. Let’s hope he doesn’t actually die, though. The world needs pretty people.
