NETFLIX’S OBSESSION
A Stream Of True Crime And 8 You Need To Watch

Whether Netflix is obtaining rights to true crime narratives and documentaries or making their own, it’s obvious the streaming platform loves the genre, just as much as we do. The real-life storylines captivate, pull us in and keep us fascinated and there are so many to choose from. If you need a little guidance on what to watch, true crime-wise on Netflix, check out these PROVOKR-approved titles:
ABDUCTED IN PLAIN SIGHT
Jan Broberg was abducted from her home, not once, but twice. The kidnapper lived next door and Jan’s parents were friends with the suspect. Abducted in Plain Sight is unbelievable and shows that loving thy neighbor may not always be good for you.
AMERICAN CRIME STORY
Ryan Murphy loves creating anthologies and we think American Crime Story is his best. Each season explores a real crime, including the O.J. Simpson trial and the assassination of Gianni Versace. Season three — about Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton — will debut in September 2020, so the time to catch up on the first two seasons is now.
THE CONFESSION KILLER
This five-part docuseries follows Henry Lee Lucas, who confessed to killing more than 360 people over an eight year period. But as DNA testing improves, law enforcement discovers that evidence contradicts the testimony. Henry Lee may be a serial confessor, but is he a serial killer? The Confession Killer tries to answer that exact question.
THE STAIRCASE
Author Michael Peterson was convicted of the first degree murder of his wife. Peterson claimed it was an accident, caused by falling down a flight of stairs. However, the jury disagreed. The Staircase spans 15 years, diving deep into the 2001 events. It also provides a look into the criminal justice system.
MINDHUNTER
Mindhunter is based on the caseload of FBI agent John E. Douglas. He interviewed serial killers in an attempt to solve them. The Netflix series, starring Jonathan Groff, offers a peek into the minds of prolific serial killers. Its narrative will keep you engrossed.
CONVERSATIONS WITH A KILLER: THE TED BUNDY TAPES
Part of the appeal of true crime is understanding what motivates these people. Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes offer insight into his psyche. With first-person interviews and a lot of archival footage, you’re likely to learn a lot about this handsome but deadly killer.
WHO KILLED LITTLE GREGORY?
When 4-year-old Gregory Villemin turned up dead near a French river, his parents fought a legal battle to track down his killer. But as the waters became murky, the case remained unsolved. The 2019 docuseries Who Killed Little Gregory? aims to shed some light on a cold case.
THE DEVIL NEXT DOOR
In 1986, Cleveland grandfather John Demjanjuk was accused of being the Nazi prison guard and murderer, Ivan The Terrible. In the Netflix documentary The Devil Next Door, the Israeli trial reveals what happened in the courtroom. It’s a thrilling account, with an unexpected ending.
