The four gritty Defenders of New York City
The Defenders
Marvel’s Cinematic Universe goes beyond the adventures of Iron Man, Captain America, and The Avengers. The MCU includes a suite of adult-oriented Netflix programming. The streaming giant turned four of Marvel’s street-level comic book heroes into TV shows, and it’s all coming to a head on August 18 with The Defenders, an eight-episode miniseries which will see New York’s grittiest and sexiest heroes team up to take down a threat to the city, led by a mysterious villain played by the great Sigourney Weaver. Let’s take a look at each of The Defenders and their respective Netflix shows, all available to stream now.
Daredevil
Matt Murdock was first portrayed by Ben Affleck in the 2003 Daredevil film, but, barring some steamy scenes with Jennifer Garner, most fans were left disappointed, and the Netflix series, though based on the same source material, is in no way related to the movie. The beguilingly handsome Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) earned significantly more praise for his take on the blind crime-fighter. The show got a second season, which debuted in 2016 and introduced fan favorite bloodthirsty vigilante, The Punisher (The Walking Dead’s sexy bad boy, Jon Bernthal), who will be getting his own spin-off series later in 2017, followed by Daredevil season 3, possibly in 2018.
Jessica Jones
Jessica Jones’s brief career as a superhero was cut short when she was put under the spell of the villainous Kilgrave, whose voice can literally put people under his control. At the start of her Netflix show, Jessica (played by Kristin Ritter) is a drunken private detective, but when Kilgrave returns, she is ultimately forced into a battle to end his reign of terror, overcome her post-traumatic stress, and free herself from his imposing shadow. After The Defenders, the adorably jaded Jessica Jones will get a second season, though no date has been set yet.
Luke Cage
There’s no getting around it: Mike Colter as Luke Cage is the hunkiest hero on television. After making his sexually-charged debut in Jessica Jones, Luke Cage headlined his own series, which premiered in September 2016. In his show, Cage went up against Cottonmouth, played by Mahershala Ali (who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in last year’s Moonlight), and Black Mariah, portrayed by Emmy-winner Alfre Woodard. Conveniently for fans of Colter’s impressive muscles, Luke Cage spends most of the series wearing conspicuously tight t-shirts, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Iron Fist
The final piece of the puzzle before The Defenders airs, is Iron Fist. Danny Rand (played by Finn Jones, perhaps the dreamiest actor on The Defenders) has been presumed dead for 15 years, but he’s finally returned to New York City, and he’s brought with him the supernatural ability to punch really, really hard. While Iron Fist has yet to be renewed for a second season (we’ll probably have to wait to see how the character is received in The Defenders) the classic comic book stories often featured Rand teaming up with Luke Cage as “Heroes for Hire,” so we wouldn’t be surprised to see the shows follow that pattern.
