Barry on Netflix

In the final stretch of this historic presidency—ending in the now infamous election of Trump—Netflix’s low-budget Obama biopic couldn’t have come at a better time. Painstakingly researched by writer Adam Mansbach (Go the Fuck to Sleep), Barry—Obama’s preferred name at this time—chronicles the future president’s struggle to come to turns with his identity as a biracial student living in Harlem. His challenges, when juxtaposed with our knowledge of his eventual success, will (hopefully) inspire U.S. viewers and beg the question: Can we take a page out of Barry’s book and rise to the challenge ahead of us? We can only hope.
