Netflix’s Anthology

It should come as no surprise that Netflix, one of the biggest disruptors of both the film and television industries, launched a show that incorporates the best aspects of both. United by setting—Chicago—and similar overarching themes, Easy creates a stirring patchwork of episodes that can stand alone like a short film and, at the same time, serve the show’s grander exploration of love, sex and varying states of happiness in modern America. Whether writer, director and creator Joe Swanberg is uncovering the performative nature of gender roles in one episode or chronicling the young naiveté of a budding lesbian millennial in another, the mumblecore maven deftly brings a rare combination of humor and depth to the ever-changing, ever-expanding landscape of love in his new series. So don’t let his modest title fool you: Swanberg’s sexy new series is no “easy” feat.
