USA cyclist Connor Fields

Tucked into the Team USA bio for Texas-native Connor Fields is this—possibly portentous—factoid from his past: Fields “won the geography bee in 5th grade with the answer to the final question being Rio de Janeiro.” Fields, 23, is a BMX racer who began competing in the sport at age 7. Having made it to the London Olympics in 2012, Fields was on track for Rio when a bike accident put his Olympic dreams in jeopardy. “I’ve been at the top of the sport the last few years,” said Fields. “I’ve obviously had good races and bad races mixed in, but by far the hardest thing I’ve had to overcome, and I’m still working on overcoming, is breaking my wrist four months before the Olympic Games. Not just a mild break either, I really did a number on my wrist.” Fortunately, Fields—who was chosen by Ralph Lauren to be one of the faces of its Team USA Collection—has recovered, but he missed out on a series of world-class competitions that were primed to get him prepared for the Games. Still, Fields believes his previous Olympic experience will give him a fighting chance. “You know, they say ‘it’s like riding a bike,’ he’s said. “You don’t forget.”
