Ramy, one of 2019’s breakout series, is back for its sophomore season and an uber-famous face joins the cast. Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali steps into the role of a Sheikh for a show that follows the title character’s spiritual journey. Ramy Youseff is the show’s creator, writer and lead performer.

“I remember seeing an ad for the show on Instagram before it came out, and it immediately caught my attention and I messaged it to my wife, just on some like, ‘Oh, interesting Muslim content'” Ali, who converted to Islam in 2000, recalled to Entertainment Weekly. “He gets into what is problematic about taking certain actions and how as people we’re constantly having to wrestle with our choices and our desires and at the end of the day really want to have peace and fulfillment and do strive to do what’s right.”

The thought-provoking show laced with comedic elements earned Ramy Youseff a Golden Globe last year for his relatable, effortless performance. This season, Mahershala Ali acts as a guide and support system for Ramy’s character. In the trailer, Ramy opens up about sexual desires and wonders if there is a conflict with his ambition. But in a funny moment, he makes it very clear that Ali’s character is not the subject of his desires. PROVOKR can tell that viewers will love this captivating duo.

Ramy Youseff draws on his own experiences as an Egyptian Muslim and provides a much-needed positive portrayal of American Muslims. The fresh, fascinating series is worth a watch, so binge on season one before the season resumes on Hulu starting May 29.
