Adapting TV shows from comic books is not a new trend (hello, Watchmen), but it’s always fun to see which one gets the TV treatment next. Well, Syfy is bringing the comic book miniseries Resident Alien to the small screen with Firefly alum Alan Tudyk as the lead character.

The show follows an alien biologist, Harry, who crash lands on Earth and takes on a human persona. He serves as a small town’s doctor, which, yeah, seems like not a great idea. He then gets wrapped up in solving a murder, all while trying to hide his mysterious identity. The absurd plot line gives way to some fantastic dramatic irony and comical circumstances.

The series marks Tudyk’s return to the network since the cult classic Firefly’s end in 2003. Since then, he’s loaned his voice to shows like Rick and Morty and American Dad and starred in Doom Patrol, Arrested Development, and Santa Clarita Diet

Its comic book source material is from Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse. They also co-created the miniseries.  Resident Alien is in six installments so that it could run for six full seasons on Syfy. That also lends itself to a deeper dive into the source material, which is always a plus.

The trailer — watch it above — bills Resident Alien as a “sci-fi doctor small town dramedy Earth needs now.” It also hints at Harry’s secret mission. What his goal is, we’re not sure, but it will undoubtedly be a wild ride — hopefully in a UFO.
