Sam Mendes just took home two of the top honors at the Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture, Drama and Best Director for 1917. The Oscar-winning director has a lot of tricks up his sleeve for the World War I-set production, including editing that suggests it was all filmed in one shot. The film is gaining momentum in the awards race, and he and Roger Deakins are proving to be a match made in heaven. Before (or after) you all flock to the theater to see this larger-than-life production, be sure to check out our favorite films from the 1917 director:

ROAD TO PERDITION

Tom Hanks isn’t really Tom Hanks in this 1930s-set mob movie. Released in 2002, the film starts with Tom Hanks’ character’s son witnessing a murder, thus putting his life in danger. They go down a road to redemption and the preservation of the child’s innocence.

Road to Perdition is available to rent on Amazon Prime.

JARHEAD

This film is adapted from a memoir of the same name, adding a real-life element to the war-driven film. But the film is more of a psychological thriller studying the effects of war and what it’s like to leave your families back home. With a cast that is oh-so-perfect (Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx), you won’t regret watching Jarhead.

Jarhead is available to rent on Amazon Prime.

SKYFALL

Skyfall is Sam Mendes’ most popular film of the 2010s. Boasting a significant run at the box office and lauded as one of the best Bond films of all time, Mendes brings a captivating and thrilling adventure to all viewers. Definitely watch Skyfall before No Time To Die hits theaters.

Skyfall is available to rent on Amazon Prime.

AMERICAN BEAUTY

If cancel culture hasn’t affected your viewing of Kevin Spacey films, take two hours to watch this 1999 Best Picture winner. Sam Mendes won Best Director for American Beauty, which happened to be his feature film debut. The film tells the story of a sexually frustrated suburban dad who recounts the last three weeks of his life, including the fantasies about his teenage daughter’s friend.

American Beauty is available on Netflix.

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD

There is nothing we love more than a Kate Winslet/Leonardo DiCaprio movie. The film is a documentation of one couple throughout the 1950s that struggles to cope with their personal problems. Fortunately, none of those issues involve Kate leaving Leo off a door that he obviously could have fit on.

Revolutionary Road is available on Netflix.
