The late Tejano pop icon Selena is finally getting the biographical treatment at Netflix. Selena: The Series puts The Walking Dead actress Christian Serratos into the famous singer’s bell-bottoms.

This December, Selena: The Series tells her story starting from when she was a young girl. Madison Taylor Baez plays Selena as a child. The drama carefully documents her relationship with her father and manager Abraham Quintanilla Jr. The first teaser trailer includes a voiceover of someone asking Selena if she trusts her father, to which she replies, “yes.”

Selena’s father — played by Ricardo Chavira in the series — hired the woman who killed his daughter in 1995. Though the first season won’t show the Latina singer’s death, it will inform the narrative. Selena was killed by her fan club president, Yolanda Saldívar.  She also oversaw Selena’s brand. But, Selena discovered that Saldívar embezzled money. Saldívar committed the murder and then sentenced to life in prison with a chance of parole in 2025.

Christian Serratos has personal memories of Selena: “when I was younger, I remember hearing her music in the house,” Serratos told Entertainment Weekly. “When I got older, YouTube became a big thing and I discovered this video of her performing ‘Que Creias.’ Whenever I would talk about Selena, that was the video I showed every one of her. I was able to perform that song on the show, and I was so nervous and so excited! I didn’t want to speak to anyone because that was my special moment with her. It was really incredible!”

The nine-episode Netflix series debuts on December 4 with Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, as an executive producer. We can’t wait to see this pop icon introduced to a new generation.
