Seven Seconds on Netflix
Criminal Cops In New York
If you have an internet connection, it’s pretty much impossible to be bored in 2018. Even if you’re depressed, there’s just so much content to consume across Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and all the other streaming sites to keep you busy.
Netflix is currently the undisputed leader in the realm of streaming-exclusive TV shows; every month, they release a ton of new programs for all audiences, from Atypical and Mindhunters to The End of the F***king World and The Defenders. There’s something for every type of viewer.
Seven Seconds is a dark, gritty, and racially-charged crime thriller set on the mean streets of New York, following a young cop (Beau Knapp) who accidentally kills a black teen and is confronted with his own morality as the whole world burns down around him. Regina Hall plays the detective investigating the crime. The grim tale is evocative of classic stories like Cop Land and Netflix’s own The Killing (both Seven Seconds and The Killing come from creator Veena Sud), but with an extra dose of ice-cold nihilism.
The series is based on the 2013 Russian film, The Major, which follows the same premise of an accidental killing and subsequent cover-up. Hopefully, the series will spark an interest in the original film, which made quite a showing at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
Seven Seconds launches on Netflix on February 23.
