Steamy Streaming: Queer Cinema
Tangerine, Moonlight, Concussion, The Pass + more!

When you sift through the LGBTQ section on Netflix, there are a lot of films that never saw the light of day in the mainstream media. They were “too artsy” and probably a little too groundbreaking to get recognition. We at PROVOKR are here to do what we do best: turn you on to new things. This week, it’s queer cinema. Pride Month has come and gone, but we should still celebrate love and all its forms. Some of these titles might be familiar, but others might not be. So login and turn on to these steamy, provocative queer-narrative films:
THE PASS
This 2016 Lionsgate feature is based on a play of the same name. Most of the action takes place in one room. It follows the friendship of two soccer players that turns into a little more than friends. Ten years later, the men reconnect and talk about the night that changed their lives.
BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR
You can’t have an LGBTQ film list without this French favorite. The coming-of-age story pushed boundaries when it was released in 2014, but it also opened hearts. If you haven’t seen this beautiful, sexy movie, drop everything now and watch.
MOONLIGHT
Yes, Moonlight is available on Netflix now. Barry Jenkins’ film — which won Best Picture a few years back — tells the story of one person in three parts. It starts in childhood, then adolescence and ends with adulthood. It’s a stunning film about the intricaies of life and the intersectionality of being a black, gay man.
GOD’S OWN COUNTRY
God’s Own Country is essentially a UK version of Brokeback Mountain — and it’s just as good if not better. The 2017 film takes place in Yorkshire where a Romanian migrant worker comes to the farm of his soon-to-be lover.
BELOW HER MOUTH
Below Her Mouth is about a love affair to escape reality, but it also awakens Jasmine’s sexuality. It’s a complicated relationship filled with back-arching sex. Watch it alone, or with that person you can’t keep your hands off.
SORRY ANGEL
The French definitely know how to be more free. This love story follows a sick writer and his summer fling. Time is not on their side, so they have to live a life full of love as quickly as possible
CONCUSSION
Think of a lesbian Fifty Shades and you essentially have the premise of Concussion. An older woman pays women to have sex with her, most of them only lasting one night. It’s sexy and thrilling.
TANGERINE
Sean Baker is one of the most innovative directors of this generation. His film Tangerine was follows a trangender prostitute in LA. The vibrance and environmental filming is enough to captivate any viewer.
