Joaquin Phoenix is on his way to securing an Oscar for one of the craziest performances of the decade. All joking aside, Joker touches on mental health in this world and puts it at the forefront of viewers’ minds. Though Joaquin’s performance was top-notch, we invite you to view these equally crazy, compelling roles by some of the biggest names in Hollywood:

AMERICAN PSYCHO

Christian Bale has a knack for playing insane, memorable characters. No one fits that bill better than Patrick Bates. The Wall Street tycoon reels women in then murders them. It’s unclear how many women fell for his murderous tendencies, but it’s implied it was a lot more than what we see in the film.

SUICIDE SQUAD

Say what you will about this DC Comics adaptation, but there is one thing we can agree on: it is batshit crazy. Margot Robbie steals the show as Harley Quinn (and she’ll reprise her role in Birds of Prey), but it was Jared Leto who freaked everyone out. His interpretation of the Joker ventured off screen where he sent pigs’ heads to his co-stars to get in the right mindset. That’s taking method acting to an extreme level.

ONE HOUR PHOTO

Robin Williams brought his manic energy to every performance, but it was much more reserved in One Hour Photo. The 2002 film follows a photo developer at a store who becomes obsessed with a particular family. You can feel his eyes on you at all time in this thrilling film.

THE UNTOUCHABLES

Now, Al Capone was truly a crazy person, but Robert DeNiro’s portrayal of the gangster took it to another dimension. The true story of how Eliot Ness took down the biggest mobster is captivating, and Capone is at the center of it all.

GONE GIRL

Gillian Flynn’s novel Gone Girl was the twisting, turning thriller we wanted from a female author. When it was adapted for the big screen, Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike became Nick and Amy Dunne. It could not have been cast more perfectly. The two impeccably capture the toxic relationship and the insane personalities of the protagonists, leading to a well-crafted adaptation.

PSYCHO

Alfred Hitchcock coined crazy with the adaptation of Psycho and namely Norman Bates. The motel murder mystery feature that classic Hitchcockian twist that we can’t get enough of. Watch this classic to get a feel for the evolution of this archetype.
