STEAMY STREAMING

You wanna rock? Well, check out these favorite music movies.

With the Mötley Crüe biopic The Dirt now available to stream on Netflix, you might feel the urge to check out other music-inspired films on your favorite musicians. There are the self-proclaimed classics like Ray. Then there’s the lesser-known but equally good films, like The Runaways. Regardless of whether you like these particular people’s music, they’re still worthy of a watch:

GIMME SHELTER

You can probably guess what band this documentary is about. Yea, it’s the Rolling Stones. The 1970 film from famous documentarians the Maysels brothers follows the popular rock band on its 1969 tour. It leads up to the concert Altamont Speedway Free Festival that left four people dead and countless people injured. The gritty, rockstar lifestyle is not always glamorous.

RAY

Jamie Foxx picked up an Oscar for his honest portrayal of soul master Ray Charles. The good biopics present information to the audience that it may not have known. That’s what Ray does. It highlights the singers extensive drug use, and reminds viewers of the humanity of our favorite musicians. The “Georgia On My Mind” singer (you didn’t think I, Georgia, would go without mentioning this song, did you?) was set to appear at one of the film’s premieres, but he died only months before its release.

I’M NOT THERE

Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There is not your traditional biopic. Instead of casting one person to play the Pulitzer-prize winning songwriter Bob Dylan, he cast six. Each character brings a little something to Dylan’s personality and life, including a show-stopping performance from Cate Blanchett. The genre-breaking movie is what we would expect from Haynes, and the end result is a beautiful, unconventional narrative on the impact of Dylan’s music.

THE RUNAWAYS

The story of the first all-female rock band is one of high-life living and a lot of shenanigans. So if you’ve already watched The Dirt, this has a similar vibe. The two most notable people to come out of The Runaways are Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, played by Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart, respectively. Bad reputations were their middle names, and the rock and roll life was suited for them. Though a highly divisive film, The Runaways will leave you looking at the performers in a different way.

LAST DAYS

Though Gus Van Sant’s Last Days doesn’t explicitly name his character Kurt Cobain, the similarities between the Nirvana member and MIchael Pitt’s character are uncanny. The movie follows the last days of a Seattle musician. It’s a raw look at the realities of the music world that allows for introspection.

AMY

You didn’t think we were going to leave Amy Winehouse off this list, did you? The Academy Award-winning documentary about the British rocker with that iconic winged eyeliner has drawn people in since its release in 2015. The movie came out four years after the singers death. Amy is an emotional look at the singer’s life, and it will have you reaching for the tissues and your copy of Back to Black.
