Ridley Scott made headlines this week when his production company, Scott Free, announced it’s eyeing the rights to a pandemic novel. The coincidentally timed book, The End of October by Lawrence Wright, centers on a fast-spreading disease. With Ridley Scott at the helm, PROVOKR expects this film to be a big deal. This week’s Steamy Streaming takes a look at some of Ridley Scott’s best movies.

THE MARTIAN

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association categorized this Matt Damon-led feature as a comedy, but the isolation film is far from that. A stranded-on-Mars botanist has to find a way to survive on the uninhabited planet.

BLADE RUNNER

Let’s take it back to 1982 — aka peak Harrison Ford. The franchise fiend lent his talents to the sci-fi narrative and starred alongside Daryl Hannah. The futuristic film was followed up with Blade Runner 2049, which was not directed by Ridley Scott and released in 2017.

THELMA AND LOUISE

Any movie where Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis get chased by the police is a must-watch. The best friends take a road trip and quickly find themselves dealing with the consequences of their actions. It’s a thrilling joyride that you’ll want to take over and over.

ALIEN

Sigourney Weaver is the feminist icon we deserve. Ridley Scott’s female leads never seem contrived. Instead, they are fully-formed characters that are progressive for their time — and even progressive by today’s standard. Alien demonstrates just how good women are at kicking ass.

BLACK HAWK DOWN

Yes, Ridley Scott directed this rewatchable classic. The rescue mission plot reels you in from the beginning and keeps you hooked throughout its duration.

AMERICAN GANGSTER

American Gangster is a biographical picture of epic proportions. Denzel Washington assumes the role of drug lord Frank Lucas. The stunning supporting cast features Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin and Russell Crowe.

G.I. JANE

Back to feminism, G.I. Jane shows that women can do exactly what a man can — that includes becoming a soldier. Demi Moore’s performance in the title role will make any woman feel powerful.

SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME

Ridley Scott also directed an erotic thriller. The 1987 film is set in New York City where a cop is assigned to look after a wealthy witness to murder. Of course, he falls in lust with her and it is a whole mess of a situation. Not to mention, there’s a killer on the loose.
