For those who live in the U.S., we can get a little preoccupied with our own media. It’s right there ready to be consumed, but often times the ideas come from an international show or there is a foreign show that is even better than our usuals. So if you find yourself rewatching Breaking Bad for the upteenth time, try out some of these international shows. They just might surprise you.

PRISONERS OF WAR

The Israeli series Prisoners of War served as inspiration for the hit show Homeland. The show ran for two seasons and follows a group of soldiers who return home from war. The military soon launches an investigation when they find discrepancies in their stories about covert missions. Prisoners of War is available on Hulu.

GOMORRAH

Season four of this Italian crime drama dropped early last year, providing you with enough material to binge. It’s full of all the aspects of the mobster life: drugs, sex and death. Gomorrah is available on Netflix.

SHERLOCK

The second you see Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes, you can’t imagine another person playing him. His dry humor coupled with pure arrogance makes for a truly believable interpretation of a beloved character. Sherlock is available on Netflix.

THE BUREAU

Critics have hailed The Bureau as one of the best TV series to come out of France, and we would have to agree. The espionage thriller has everything that makes a good show. We can’t get enough. The Bureau is available with YouTube TV.

HAPPY VALLEY

There is no shortage of crime dramas in this world. This British series follows a police sergeant who finds herself wrapped up in a kidnapping plot. With only two seasons under its belt, watch this if you want a quick binge. Happy Valley is available on Netflix.

CHEWING GUM

Also from across the pond, Chewing Gum follows a 24-year-old virgin who just wants to live the life everyone else presumably does. She wants to have sex, that’s for sure, so she tries to learn everything she can. But the best way to learn is to practice. Chewing Gum is available on Netflix.

FAUDA

Israel has given us ample shows. Fauda shows both sides of the Israel-Palestine conflict. It’s full of action, but it brings a very human perspective to war. Fauda is available on Netflix.

EL MARGINAL

El marginal hails from the vibrant country of Argentina. The series follows a former cop who is sent undercover in prison to investigate a kidnapping. The thrilling show will have you hooked from the very beginning. El marginal is available on Netflix.

THE BRIDGE

The Bridge comes to us from Sweden and Denmark. It’s another murder mystery sparked by the death of a woman who is found by a bridge. The gripping tale will lead you on an unforgettable viewing experience. The Bridge is available on Hulu.

BABYLON BERLIN

PROVOKR loves Babylon Berlin. The German 1920s drama is what you would get if you mixed Chinatown and Cabaret. It’s sexy, entertaining and easy to binge. Babylon Berlin is available on Netflix.

MONEY HEIST

Money Heist is a Spanish drama about a team of thieves named after famous cities. The show has won several major awards and will return for a fourth season this year, so start watching this one soon. Money Heist is available on Netflix.

DEUTSCHLAND 83

If you already miss The Americans, then you need to watch Deutschland 83. The German series takes place before the fall of the Berlin Wall and follows an undercover Eastern soldier sent to the Western side. The point of view is intriguing and there are only eight episodes of the limited series. Deutschland 83 is available on Hulu.

A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL

Hugh Grant and Ben Winshaw team up to tell the story of the Thorpe affair, which involved the UK Liberal Party leader’s conspiracy to kill his male lover. The series takes a cheeky tone while highlighting an important LGBTQ narrative. A Very English Scandal is available on Amazon Prime.
