The Terror, a Ghost Story
AMC's New Mystery About a Lost Ship
In 1845, Captain John Franklin left England with two ships, Terror and Erebus. He left with over one hundred men, searching for a new passage to China. None returned. The fate of Franklin’s expedition became the stuff of legend, and even the discovery of The Franklin in 2016 did little to resolve the enduring mystery of the fates of all those lost sailors.
In 2007, author Dan Simmons wrote The Terror, a novel fictionalizing the final voyage of Captain Franklin and his crew, but with a supernatural twist and now AMC is turning that novel into a television event.
The network behind The Walking Dead and Preacher is promising that The Terror will be the horror show to beat in 2018. With an all-star cast including Ciarán Hinds (as Captain Franklin), Jared Harris (Mad Men), and Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones), The Terror makes tremendous use of its frigid setting and exploits the endless white of a perpetual blizzard for maximum horrific effect.
AMC has made a name for itself as a home for visually distinct programs with an emphasis on intimate characterization and boundary-pushing storytelling, from Into the Badlands to Breaking Bad and Hell on Wheels. The network is in a position where it can forge ahead with bold, creative choices and take chances on shows like The Terror, which promises a unique mix of monster horror, historical fiction, and harrowing survival adventure.
The Terror debuts March 26 on AMC.
