THE SEXY, SPOOKY SOCIETY
The YA Drama Hits Netflix May 10

On the surface, Netflix’s upcoming thriller/drama The Society looks like a bunch of teenagers running around without adult supervision. Upon watching the trailer, which is set to teenage popstar Billie Eilish’s “bury a friend,” you’ll notice The Society isn’t your typical YA thriller.
Eilish’s synth-y, creepy (in a good way) tones provided an eerie backdrop to the town of West Ham. Well, it looks like the town of West Ham, except there is one component missing: All of the parents are gone. Where are they? We don’t know, and neither do the teenagers.
As one can well assume, teenage shenanigans ensue. There is sex, drinking, drugs, oh, and murder. The young adults split into two camps. One wants to build a society that resembles the one they lived in, while the other wants to make it bigger and better. The latter just seems like a middle finger to the world in which they previously existed.
With such a young cast, there aren’t many recognizable names on the call sheet — which is actually refreshing. Kathryn Newton (Reese Witherspoon’s sassy daughter on Big Little Lies) and Sean Berdy (Emmett on Freeform’s canceled Switched At Birth) are the biggest names attached to the project. If there’s more reason to watch this when it comes to Netflix May 10, it’s to see the start of some actors’ careers.
The Society has been described by many as Lord of the Flies meets HBO’s The Leftovers. Though we would have hoped for this situation as a teenager, we have to assume it’s not going to turn out well.
