When it comes to the horror genre, the most realistic plot lines are often the scariest. That must be the methodology behind AMC’s hit show The Terror, which is back for its second season.

For those who are unfamiliar, The Terror takes historical events and turns them into even more horrific events. For example, season one takes place in the Arctic on two Royal Navy ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, in 1848. The ships get stranded and the worst things imaginable happen.

Season two is set during World War II in Japanese internment camps in Southern California. The injustice forced upon the Japanese causes folklore legend bakemono to come out. The being is attached to the history of Japanese-American internment during WWII, and it also made an appearance in the wars in the South Pacific.

Director Ridley Scott executive produces the hour-long drama that will leave you hiding under the sheets and checking under the bed or outside your window for monsters. Or maybe picking up a history book to deep dive into the topic and the lore surrounding it.

The Terror airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
