The Chair
The Chair is a Netflix comedy that drops on August 20. It stars Sandra Oh as a university’s first-ever woman of color English department head. It follows Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim (Oh) and the trials and tribulations she faces.
Actress Amanda Peet is showrunner, executive producer, and writer of the series.
Everything Will Be Fine
Everything Will Be Fine is an upcoming Spanish series written and produced by Diego Luna. It follows a separated couple who stay together for the sake of their child. The show follows the parent’s individual choices and choices they make together. It premieres on Netflix starting on August 20.
Reminiscence
Reminiscence is a new sci-fi thriller about scientist Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman) who discovers a way to relive the past. Against his better judgment, Bannister decides to use the technology to find his long-lost love, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson). The film opens in theaters and drops on HBO Max on August 20.
Nine Perfect Strangers
Nine Perfect Strangers is a Hulu original series based on a novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty. Its all-star cast includes Nicole Kidman, Samara Weaving, Melissa McCarthy, Grace Van Patten, Luke Evans, Manny Jacinto, and Asher Keddie. The setting is a health and wellness resort, and all nine “perfect” strangers are there for a very similar reason–but they don’t know it yet. Three episodes premiered on Hulu on August 18.
Eyes on the Prize: Hallowed Ground
Eyes on the Prize: Hallowed Ground is an HBO Max documentary that reflects on and celebrates Henry Hampton’s creation of Eyes on the Prize (1987-1990). HBO Max describes it as “conjur[ing] ancestral memories, activat[ing] the radical imagination and explor[ing] the profound journey for Black liberation through the voices of the movement.” It starts streaming on August 19.
In the Same Breath
In the Same Breath is another HBO Max documentary about Covid-19 and the pandemic. Directed by Nanfu Wang, it recounts daily life when the pandemic started and how much has changed. It began streaming on August 18.
Marlon Wayans: You Know What It Is
On a much lighter note, There is a new HBO Max comedy special. Marlon Wayans: You Know What It Is, premieres on August 19.
