PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: NEXT OF KIN
Next of Kin reboots the Paranormal Activity franchise. As you may recall, Paranormal Activity premiered in 2007 and told the story of a variety of families terrorized by a demon known as Toby throughout six films. Toby is back!
In Next of Kin, the seventh film in the series, a documentary filmmaker follows Margot as she heads to a secluded Amish community, in the hopes of meeting and learning about her long-lost mother and extended family. Following a string of strange occurrences and discoveries, she soon realizes this community that welcomed them into their home is sinister with a demonic presence. Next of Kin stars Emily Bader, Roland Buck III, Dan Lippert, and Henry Ayers-Brown and streams on Paramount on October 29.
As you will see in the teaser below, Next of Kin is a welcome throwback to its found-footage origins, but also goes back to Puritan times.
LAST NIGHT IN SOHO
Two young women from different eras form a psychic bond in Edgar Wright’s modern-day Hitchcock horror thriller. The story takes place simultaneously in the ’60s and the present day in Soho and the West End of London. Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie known as Elise in JoJo Rabbit), a fashion student who recently arrived in London, experiences what seems to be a vivid dream. Mesmerized by a gorgeous young singer named Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy, from a Queen’s Gambit) who is a vision in a blond bouffant and pink chiffon dress, the two women meet in a seedy nightclub where they witness a bloody murder and their lives fuse forever. Last Night in Soho is thoroughly entertaining with a killer 60’s soundtrack.
Last Night in Soho opens in theatres on October 29.
HALLOWEEN & SCREAM
Nothing beats the original Halloween. John Carpenter’s 1978 film is a chilling introduction to the horror genre and Michael Myers, one of its most enduring villains. If you watch only one horror movie for Halloween, this should be it. If you are up for a double feature, Scream starring Drew Barrymore is a classic scarefest waiting to be watched in the dark on Halloween eve.
