When They See US
Ava DuVernay’s Latest for Netflix

Ava DuVernay is at it again and doing what she does best with her latest Netflix miniseries When They See Us. The four-part drama, which DuVernay created, wrote and directed centers around the Central Park Five and their story of wrongful conviction, media scrutiny, their time in prison, eventual exoneration and settlement with the city that vilified the teenagers and now men. The series spans over 25 years, the same amount of years the Central Park Five spent fighting for freedom and vindication.

From the initial questioning of the teenagers, to the courtroom drama, and the traumatic devastation a guilty verdict brought to these boys and their families, the series follows the lives of these notorious five as they transition from boys to men. DuVernay hopes to finally tell the truth behind the story that’s gripped headlines for decades and be a voice for these men. “When They See Us is the story of the boys from their eyes and their hearts,” the director said. Oprah Winfrey and Robert De Niro are behind the series as Executive Producers with DuVernay’s Array FilmWorks.

The series features a cast including Jharrel Jerome, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, Felicity Huffman, Famke Janssen, Niecy Nash, Reece Noi, Anunjanue Ellis, Kylie Bunbury and Storm Reid. When They See Us premieres May 31 on Netflix.
