I’ve been feeling particularly inspired by women on TV recently. Gone are the days where I have to watch women fall in and out of love over and over again, thus feeding into the thought women need a man to survive. Now, women kick ass. Here are just five shows where badass women are the focus:

QUEEN SONO

Netflix’s new series Queen Sono hails from South Africa. Pearl Thusi stars as the main character, an adult orphan who finds fulfillment working as a secret agent on behalf of all of Africa. She’s sexy, smart and can take people out wearing three-inch heels and a ball gown. Now that’s what I call empowerment.

HOMELAND

Claire Danes fights just as much with her hands as she does her brain on Showtime’s Homeland. The bipolar CIA agent overcomes and conquers so much in the show’s eight seasons. It’s a true testament to what women can do.

THE HANDMAID’S TALE

Elisabeth Moss fights the patriarchy in almost every role she assumes, but nothing is quite like The Handmaid’s Tale. The Hulu original brings Margaret Atwood’s novel to horrifying life and harkens to the world we live in now. Even though women are oppressed more in the show’s nation Gilead, Moss’ character June finds a way to stick it to the man.

BATWOMAN

We’ve seen so many men as Batman, so it’s about time we get a modern adaptation of Batwoman. Ruby Rose stars in the titular role on The CW series where she takes down Gotham residents who deserve it. Ruby Rose is equally badass as the caped crusader as she is in real life.

WATCHMEN

Regina King stars in the central role of this HBO adaptation of the graphic novel Watchmen. As she investigates white supremacists as masked vigilantes, she has to hide her identity too. She uncovers a whole lot more than she expects, and we get to see her kick ass along the way.
