Future Shock

A short film by Andrew Huang

After graduating with a fine arts degree from the University of Southern California, visual artist and film director Andrew Huang created this mesmerizing, dystopian video titled “Doll Face”—featuring a robot trying to learn human ways—that speaks to the negative impact media has on a society’s perception of beauty. For Huang, the work was supposed to be more thoughtful than shocking, but either way he’s happy with the result. “I don’t like to make work that is sensational,” he said. “It’s not my intent to make ‘disturbing’ work. But in the act of earnestly exploring certain themes that reappear in my work, there’s always some sort of return to body imagery that can inevitably turn weird and get under people’s skin. If that’s the by-product of my work, I think that can only be a good thing.”
