Promising Young Women explores a young woman with a double life, played by Carey Mulligan. This ‘behind the scenes video’ exposes the inner world of the award-winning movie. Emerald Fennell is a first-time director of this movie about a woman on a revenge mission. Cassie Thomas (Mulligan) is out for justice after her friend is raped and commits suicide.
The film is a thriller (with comedic elements), championing a range of themes that include loss, sadness, optimism, and romance, affecting life, relationships, and family. In the “Make Me Coffee” shop, the cast has a great scene where everyone sets Cassie up to get the guy. Laverne Cox adds humor with her sharp-edged dialogue. Cox is best known for Orange Is the New Black and the film Can You Keep a Secret? and brings spirit to this role that blends well with Carey Mulligan’s character’s strong persona.
A B-roll club sequence where a young man seduces Mulligan and offers her a ride home depicts Mulligan’s character as a know-it-all straight arrow who does whatever she must to survive, but does she? Cassie is the essence of the film and its plot. The closing wedding scene leaves us with laughs from co-star Bo Burnham, and there are a series of bloopers to enjoy.
After pandemic delays, the film was released in theaters on December 25, 2020. This month, it will be available on streaming services and video on demand.
