Here are eight trailers for the upcoming Academy Awards Nominees in Motion Picture. PROVOKR is excited to reveal these picks.

MANK

Mank is a stunning, black-and-white picture about Herman Mankiewicz’s life, the writer of Citizen Kane. Produced by Netflix and directed by David Fincher, Mank is a heartfelt look into Mankiewicz’s troubling life as an alcoholic, neurotic man obsessed with completing the script for Citizen Kane. Gary Oldman plays Herman “Mank” Mankiewicz, and Amanda Seyfried co-stars as Marian Davies. Mank is up for a Best Picture nomination in the Drama category and captures the aesthetic of the 1940s with poise and skill.

THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7

The Trial of the Chicago 7 stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and more and centers on Anti-Vietnam War protestors who incite riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention. Aaron Sorkin is the director, and Paramount Pictures produces the film; Netflix handles distribution. Cohen’s performance is nominated for an Academy Award and remains exceptional, pulling viewers into Sorkin’s world immediately. The film is nominated for a Best Picture award as well.

THE FATHER

Anthony Hopkins’ thespian performance in The Father holds up to an Oscar nomination as well. Writer and director Florian Zeller created a film about a man who loses his mind to dementia–inspiring his daughter to hire a caretaker to manage his life. The Father is also up for Best Picture.

SOUND OF METAL

Riz Ahmed also stars in Sound of Metal, about a drummer who loses his hearing and becomes depressed, winning him Oscar praise. The film is spectacular and inspires viewers to think about the ramifications of sensory loss and mental health.

PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN

Promising Young Woman is an excellent comedy about the life of a promiscuous woman who goes around coaxing men into bed then exposes their creepiness. The film is directed by Emerald Fennell and stars a prolific Carey Mulligan, who earns an Oscar nod.

NOMADLAND

Nomadland is another Academy Award-nominated film in the Best Picture and Actor categories. It is a western directed by Chloe Zhao, which stars Frances McDormand. In it, a woman leaves home to explore the west.

MINARI

Next, Minari is nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. Lee Isaac Chung directs the film and explores a world where a South Korean family immigrates to the United States to live the American Dream. The film stars Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh-jung, and Will Patton.

JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH

Finally, Judas and the Black Messiah follow the Black Panther party’s exploits after an FBI informant, played by Lakeith Stanfield, betrays Fred Hampton, played by Daniel Kaluuya. Stanfield’s character lays out information about the party to the FBI to jeopardize the organization’s success. The film is up for multiple award nominations and succeeds in creating tension and portraying the world of the Black Panthers in the 1960s. PROVOKR loves these picks and hopes you will, too.
