BROTHERHOOD
Watch The Oscar-Nominated Short Film Now

Brotherhood is an Academy Award-nominated short. The film focuses on cultural and familial themes of the Middle East. Its cinematography is stunning with deep blues and reds blended to paint the characters and their emotions.
The film centers on complex family dynamics among three sons and a Tunisian shepherd. When the oldest son returns home from Syria with a mysterious wife, tensions erupt between father and son. At its heart, Brotherhood targets prejudice, misunderstanding, cultural and politically charged themes.
The family mistrusts the wife. The father watches her every move and the mother is angry that Malek’s wife does nothing around the house. Both liberal and conservative ideologies affect the family and its newest addition. This new intruder serves as the antagonist in the family.
The conclusion is heart-wrenching when the youngest son gets kidnapped by a mysterious organization. Malek’s parents have suspicions and it looks like his wife may be behind the assault. We also discover Malek joined the Islamic State of Iraq (ISIS) when he was in Syria.
Tunisian-Canadian Meryam Joobeur produced and directed along with Sarra Ben Hassa and Maria Gracia Turgeon. Her work has earned recognition at top-tier film festivals. We here at PROVOKR know you won’t want to miss Brotherhood. Enjoy!
