The documentary series TRIBUTE follows young people living life in different ways and can now be seen on Vimeo. This video, Cameron, is about a dancer who uses his creativity to express life and emotions. The 13 year old is always moving because he believes it helps him communicate and he “doesn’t have to use words”. For Cameron, dance can be “happy or sad”. Cameron lives in his own world when dancing and his movement helps reveal snippets of himself.

The short film is the last of the 13 part TRIBUTE series. It’s directed by Christopher Black and uses several powerful shots to illustrate who Cameron is. He lives as two people: one, a dancer, the other a teen living his daily life. Black created this comparison using reflective shots of water, which visually mirror Cameron as a dancer in another state of mind while performing. CAMERON is produced by DAZED, B-CONFUSED and has a similar ethos to the other 13-parts of the TRIBUTE series. The common theme of the series: how hard it is to be young.

In this film, the cinematography is beautiful. The editing is concise, powerful and grabs you with each cut. Moreover, the short is enveloped by Herbie Hancock’s score. Hancock is one of the greatest jazz pianists ever. The production value is sophisticated and deserves to reach a wide audience. The cinematographer, Dustin Lane, should get similar credit to Christopher Black’s directing because Lane’s visuals are so crisp and inviting. Overall, it’s a powerful work of art that captivates emotionally and intellectually. You’ll want to watch and rewatch the entire TRIBUTE series. Here, at PROVOKR, we think it deserves 5 out of 5 stars.
