Danny Says is a 2016 documentary directed by Brendon Toller about Danny Fields, a publicist, manager, and journalist. He managed The Stooges, MC5, and the Ramones and worked for Lou Reed and Judy Collins. His groundbreaking role in music helped skyrocket the careers of 60s musicians. Fields was adept at getting his clients written about in publications like Rolling Stone.

Fields made sure that everyone saw and heard about his clients’ mundane and provocative actions. In 1966, he reprinted an interview where John Lennon observed that the Beatles were bigger than Jesus. The chaos around the comment almost broke up the band. Fields brought The Doors to Elektra Records’ attention and ended up running publicity for the label and its acts. Fields even introduced Jim Morrison to his future lover, Nico.

Danny Fields launched, managed, pal around with, and/or wrote about a laundry list of acts that included The Stooges, Ramones, Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, John Cale, Lou Reed the Velvet Underground and more. The punk pioneer’s downtown social life included hanging out with artist Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick, Iggy Pop, Lisa Robinson, and photographer Linda Eastman (Paul McCartney’s future wife.)

Danny Says is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
