Demi Lovato’s truth

Her new doc proves she's "Simply Complicated"

The first thing you might ask when you hear that 25-year-old Demi Lovato has made a second revealing documentary about her personal issues—her first came out when she was 18—is, what does someone so young have to tell us about life…twice? Turns out, quite a bit. In the 2012 documentary, Stay Strong, Demi talks about her struggles with drug addiction, self-harm, and an eating disorder, and how she had finally overcome those painful issues. The only problem was, she was high while making the entire film.

Simply Complicated, available now on youtube and here, is her apology to her fans for lying throughout Stay Strong, and not sticking with her sobriety. “It’s embarrassing to look back at the person I was,” she admits. Now she has overcome using cocaine, Adderall, and alcohol, but is still dealing with purging. In fact, she talks about relapsing here. After she and her boyfriend of six years, Wilmer Valderrama, broke up, she has a setback and started binging again. “When I’m lonely, my heart feels hungry,” she explains.

But admitting vulnerability is the key to being healthy. Telling her truth, about drugs, food, and sex—she’s back in the dating game and loving it—is why we adore Demi. This doc proves that she does indeed have a lot of wisdom to share. We can’t wait for #3!

Stay Strong is currently streaming on Netflix.
