In this stunning documentary, Yassandra Marcela Barrios Castro attempts to rally the people of her community to protect and preserve the reefs off Tiera Bomba, Colombia. She emerges a fearless leader all because of her love for the reef in Dive Tierra Bomba Dive.

The documentary takes on a narrative format by following the 19-year-old’s day. The video opens with her dreams of diving into the depths of the reef. Bubbles from her mask float up to the surface, clearly visible in the Caribbean Sea’s dark blue. Then, as she awakens, she is met with sunshine and the happenings of daily life. People play tabletop games and she converses as she makes her way to the water. It beckons her.

She discusses taking people into the sea because that’s the only way people will care. So she takes her friend diving, showing her how to use the equipment. But it’s her conversation with her fisherman father that leads to change. She proposes gathering the fisherman to speak of the harms corporations cause by dredging up the reef.

In just 10 minutes, Dive Tierra Bomba Dive creates an elevated cinematic experience. The editing team led by Laura Cairney-Keize is particularly stunning. As Yassandra parties with friends and family, the vibrancy is compared to the reef and enforces similarities among them.

The video ends with a provocative thought: “How can you value the reef before seeing it?”
