The music video, “Gold Chains,” is an illuminative look into the lifestyle of fortune and fame for Genesis Owusu, a Ghananian-Australian artist specializing in soul and restorative, reflective music. Owusu’s funk-rap song is about gold chains as a statement of culture in music. The pageantry of the piece is in the lyrics, which include, “I pray to some I’m still me/but boy these demons they been schemin’ preachin’ please believin say we’re runnin’ steamin’.” Owusu’s movements prove to be elegant in his presentation.

Gold Chains carries a message of rebirth in lyrics like “many cracks in the ceiling, I try to mend them with glue,” as he talks about stresses and other aspects of life. “When it looks so cold when it looks so cool inside these chains,” but the words may not reveal how he feels. Owusu is on a roof, sitting on a couch where people are hooking up and staring into a fish tank while rapping his lyrics.

The song highlights Owusu’s ingenuity as an artist. He is a talented songwriter and musician, with a combination of ballads and rap to utilize both ends of the musical spectrum. The video’s closing image is potent, showing a drowning in a lake, where gold chains weigh him down.  Owusu is a genius, and his music offers a wide range of talent in both R&B and rap. “Gold Chains” is from his debut album “Smiling with No Teeth,” which drops on March 5.
