HISTORY OF MODELS II

The power image is born

BY: PROVOKR Staff

After World War II we see a breakdown in the fashion chain. French couture shuts down. American fashion comes into vogue and so does the fresh scrubbed look of the American model. Modeling agencies in the US are succeeding in dominating the scene and the American model is highly sought, even in Paris. With, what seemed to be a burst, Christian Dior arrives in the 1950’s and changes everything. His hyper-stylized look is born. Feminine physicality was changed by Christian Dior’s fashion and the genius of his presentation of his fashion to the public. Richard Avedon brings this new style to vivid life with his legendary lens in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. Modeling agencies begin to create stars and generate huge paydays for their models. Models become famous and household names like Suzy Parker. It is the beginning of big business for the model and the photographer.
