JAHNKOY SHOCKS THE SYSTEM

A brand new fiercely fashion-forward designer

BY: Claire Connors

Siberian-born, New York-based designer Maria Kazakova has barely graduated from Parsons with her degree in Fashion Design & Society, but she’s already causing an uproar in the fashion world. Her streetwear-meets-sportswear line, JAHNKOY, is so modern—you can imagine an Olympic team in 2020 wearing her dazzling track suits—yet deeply rooted in the traditional dress and craftsmanship from her native ethnic group, the Crimean Tatars, as well as Africa, India, and Native American tribes.

From a distance, her work appears to be a made for the young, the diverse, the athletic, the artistic. Upon closer inspection, one sees JAHNKOY’s intricate craftsmanship of beading, embroidery, weaving, and crochet work, more appreciated by a traditional, dare we say, older client. In other words, the designer is crossing the spectrum in both design and potential clients. We love that!

In this short, vibrant fashion video, The Displaced, we see the exciting JAHNKOY clothing set against the pulsating New York City landscape. Enjoy!
