Lavender and Birdie
Fox Searchlight and the Short Game

We are pleased to present two new films from Fox Searchlight’s shorts program. Fox Searchlight began to procure short films seriously with the acquisition of Skin, the Academy Award-winning short. Searchlight Shorts was announced and is a very well crafted concept to give short films a wider audience through a YouTube channel and other social media exposure like Facebook so the audience has access to the creators of these wonderful films. A larger audience is able to see these more diverse stories and at the same time, smart like a fox, Fox Searchlight builds long lasting relationships with up and coming filmmakers. In a content hungry world it makes great sense and is a win for the filmmaker, audiences and Fox Searchlight.
PROVOKR presented Skin when it was first released and now is pleased to show 2 more films from Searchlight Shorts. Lavender is a film directed and written by Matthew Puccini which tells the story of a young man who starts to build a relationship with an older married gay couple. It is a tenderly told doomed love story. Birdie is a tense film that is a very thrilling ride, literally, on a subway train. The film was directed by Shelly Lauman and its quiet sinister moments reminded us a young Polanski’s first films. Both short films are wonderfully done in very different ways. Enjoy and feel free to join the community to discuss the creative process on Facebook.
